Getting Youth Involved in Monitoring Intertidal Crabs

Date September 18 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm

New species of crabs have been introduced or are moving into the intertidal zones across the Gulf of Maine causing potential disruption to the ecosystem. We need more data to understand how these populations are changing and where they could have the greatest impact in the future.

Join the virtual educator session on Wednesday, September 18th from 3:30 to 4:30 to discuss the research project, classroom resources, and how to get students involved in the Intertidal Crabs Community Science Project.

Support to educators include:
Ready to use, NGSS-aligned classroom resources, including class slides, videos, games, identification materials
Help with finding field sites and fieldwork materials
Ongoing support from the project team

Benefits to students include:
Connections to professional scientists and a networks of peers involved in the Intertidal Crabs Community Science project
Experience with fieldwork (aka fun exploring the intertidal zone!)
An authentic context for building STEM practices, ecosystem knowledge and understanding of localized impacts of climate change
Experience contributing significant data to an ongoing research project
